MUSE MISSION
The Importance of Corporate Identity
by Liane Sebastian

Though graphic design is one piece of the entire marketing picture, it is usually the first way that organizations communicate. Good design makes communication as effective as possible. When a message integrates harmoniously with visual appeal, the result communicates powerfully.

Your corporate identity (consisting of logo, typography, colors, and style of all visual materials) becomes synonymous with your organization and the foundation of your entire graphic communication.

Effective design has many advantages:

  • It gives your organization increased distinction, memorability, and recognition.
  • It is a condensed tangible representation of your organization to constituents.
  • It expresses your organization's style, quality, and personality.
  • It makes your benefits succinct, clear, and inspires the viewer to respond by inquiring for information, joining, or buying products.
  • It shows that you care about your organization and respect the market enough to present yourself thoughtfully and effectively. It can give your audience confidence that you will place the same concern into your efforts for them.
  • It provides a focus that helps a group define its business mission and goals — and then convey those values and directions to others.
  • It works in conjunction with an organization's long-range marketing and growth efforts.
  • It inspires pride in those within your organization:  it becomes a tangible image that those within your group can stand behind. There is no way to the effect of attitude because it is a subtle, yet evident, pervasive quality. It sets you apart from competition — to be noticed by your constituents (for people are viewers first and readers second).

Effective communication is necessary for business growth, and good design is the foundation for effective communication. But design cannot sell products or services by itself. It can initially attract the viewer, but the product or service must have intrinsic appeal. Additionally, while excellent design motivates the reader visually, excellent content and writing must accompany it. Design can't compensate for inferior content, though it can make the content look more interesting than it is. Design functions best when all the ingredients have an integrity and represent the message in a clear and memorable way.
